Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a key performance indicator for evaluating the efficiency of machines, systems or entire production lines. It shows how well a system utilizes its theoretically available performance potential by combining the three factors of availability, performance and quality. The resulting OEE value makes losses transparent and shows where there is potential for optimization.
The key figure was originally developed in the 1980s at the Japan Institute for Plant Maintenance (JIPM) and has now established itself as an important standard KPI in production. OEE enables production processes to be objectively evaluated, compared and improved in a targeted manner.
For a meaningful OEE calculation, various store floor data must be correlated with each other. The three factors availability, performance and quality each result in percentage values that are multiplied together. The OEE figure then gives an overall percentage – the higher the figure, the more effectively the plant is running.
Companies should not only determine OEE values once, but use them as a continuous control instrument.
With top MES the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) can be calculated and evaluated directly on the basis of the data generated by the solution in SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA. The key figures are based on the data available in the SAP system and are fully integrated into existing processes. This results in consistent, traceable OEE values without additional isolated solutions.
The OEE key figures are already comprehensively visualized graphically as standard and help to identify the causes of losses, derive measures and sustainably improve production performance.

OEE is a key figure for measuring the efficiency of machines and production systems. It shows how well a system is exploiting its theoretical performance potential, makes losses visible and helps to identify optimization potential.
OEE combines availability, performance and quality into an overall value.

The factors are recorded as a percentage and multiplied to reflect the actual system efficiency.
OEE serves as a continuous control instrument: downtimes, performance deviations and quality losses are identified, improvement measures are derived and productivity is sustainably increased.
Yes, with top MES, OEE values can be calculated and visualized directly on the basis of the data available in SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA and integrated into existing processes.
