Roma children in Romania: Sustainable help at the BuKi House

As a minority, Roma still have a hard time in Romania: many families live in poverty and are excluded from social participation. This situation is particularly stressful for the children. Not only do they lack food and clothing, they often have difficulties at school due to their circumstances – and the lack of formal qualifications means that they have little chance of improving their own situation.
Heidi Haller and Stefan Zell from Bad Saulgau have been running the BuKi House in the small community of Cidreag in north-western Romania for many years in order to provide sustainable support for Roma children. There, 25 Roma children currently receive breakfast and lunch and receive educational support after school. What’s more, the staff at the BuKi House strive to create acceptance for the children and their families in the community and to integrate them.
This year, the BuKi House was on the brink of collapse. The owner of the land and building terminated the lease. However, after intensive discussions, the association convinced the owner to sell the building. Both sides agreed on a price of 45,000 euros. A fair amount – but one that could only be raised with financial support from third parties.
With a donation, top flow was able to make a significant contribution to raising this sum and purchasing the BuKi house. The Roma children in Cidreag now have a place where people will look after them for many years to come.
With this commitment, we are following our tradition of foregoing gifts at Christmas and donating the money to a social project instead. Year after year, the positive response shows that we are also acting in the interests of our employees, customers and business partners.
We would like to thank them all!
